Additional cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were confirmed in North America, with two new cases in South Dakota and three new cases in British Columbia.

South Dakota

On December 5, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported cases of HPAI in commercial turkey flocks in Charles Mix and Clark Counties. There were 34,100 and 24,300 turkeys affected, respectively.

This is the sixth case of HPAI confirmed in Charles Mix in 2022. Previously, HPAI was reported in a flock of 75,100 turkeys on November 30.

Sixty-six cases of HPAI have been reported in South Dakota in 2022. Only Minnesota has had more confirmed cases with 79.

British Columbia

In Canada, HPAI was confirmed in two flocks in the City of Abbotsford on December 6, reported the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). That same day, Langley Township also reported HPAI.

Information concerning the types of birds in these flocks, or how many birds were involved has not yet been disclosed.

HPAI has now been confirmed in 31 poultry flocks in the City of Abbottsford, with seven new cases reported earlier this week. In Langley Township, this is the fourth poultry flock impacted this year, although the last reported case was on October 20.

British Columbia has had more HPAI cases in 2022 than any other province in Canada. These three new detections bring the province’s case count to 48. Of those, 30 were confirmed in Abbotsford. Other locations in British Columbia to have confirmed cases include Chilliwack (12), Langley Township (4), North Okahagan (1) and the District of Kent (1).
