World’s first lab-grown chicken sold at Singapore butcher

After Singapore approved sale of the world’s first cultivated chicken, GOOD Meat, a subsidiary of Eat Just, Inc., will be sold at Huber’s Butchery, a supplier in Singapore.

After Singapore approved sale of the world’s first cultivated chicken, GOOD Meat, a subsidiary of Eat Just, Inc., will be sold at Huber’s Butchery, a supplier in Singapore. 

More commonly known for its plant-based eggs, Eat Just received regulatory approval from Singapore for its lab-grown meat in November 2020 and December 2021. GOOD Meat will be available to the public starting January 2023, according to Business Wire

Before its commercial release, GOOD Meat was also served at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 27) in Egypt November 2022

What is lab-grown meat?

Also known as cultivated meat, lab-grown meat is made using cells harvested from living animals. Those cells are then cultured, i.e. multiplied in a controlled environment, into slabs of meat. The purpose of lab-grown meat is to pivot from animal slaughter and meet growing demand for protein. 

“Cultivated meat could be one of the solutions to over-farming due to increased population size and density and an increase in animal protein consumption in many parts of the world,” said Andre Huber, executive director of Huber’s Butchery. 

According to Eat Just, the company went through 20 production runs of cultured chicken in their 1,200-liter bioreactors to prove its manufacturing consistency. 

The two-year safety and quality approval process found that GOOD Meat met the standards of poultry meat, in terms of microbiological content, protein content, amino acid composition, monosaturated fats and minerals.
