Carbon neutral eggs are available in the U.S. for the first time due to a partnership between Dutch egg company Kipster, grocery store chain Kroger and egg producer MPS Egg Farms.

The eggs can be purchased in Kroger locations across Michigan and the Cincinnati area. The eggs are sold co-branded with Kroger’s label as Simple Truth + Kipster

MPS Egg Farms is the first commercial egg producer in the U.S. to adopt and construct this type of production model, which includes open areas of outdoor and indoor access. The house can be viewed on a 24/7 livestream and consumers can visit the farm’s visitor center in person.

With Kipster’s plans to build more farms in the U.S., carbon neutral eggs will be available in additional locations beginning in late Spring 2023.

“Choosing Simple Truth + Kipster cage-free eggs is an easy way for our customers to help create a more sustainable food system,” said Denise Osterhues, Kroger Senior Director of Sustainability and Social Impact.

“The Kipster system aligns with Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social and environmental impact plan and mission to advance positive changes for people and our planet. We focus on advancing sustainability and animal welfare in ways that also help maintain access to fresh, affordable foods for everyone.”

What does carbon-neutral mean?

Kipster achieves its carbon neutral status by adhering to The CarbonNeutral Protocol. The protocol involves reducing its greenhouse gas emissions internally and offsetting the remining emissions by supporting external carbon reduction projects.

Other actions that Kipster takes to reduce its carbon footprint include using feed that is mainly composed of surplus and by-products from crops and food processing, and removing dust, odor, ammonia or other undesirable particles from the air that leaves the poultry house using a heat pump.

Additionally, the Indiana farm eliminates male chick culling by raising the roosters as an alternative meat source. Kipster plans to make its meat birds available in stores in early 2023 and already sells meat from male layer chicks in Europe.
