A fire at a Wayne-Sanderson Farms hatchery and feed mill in Surry County, North Carolina, on January 3 damaged eggs and an egg storage building, according to reports.

According to the CC Camp Volunteer Fire Department in Elkin, North Carolina, there were no injuries to any Wayne Farms employees or firefighters. In a Facebook post, it said fire walls in the building limited the extent of the damage.

A Wayne-Sanderson Farms spokesperson has not responded to WATTPoultry’s request for more details.

Wayne Farms and Sanderson Farms merged to form Wayne-Sanderson Farms in July 2022, making it the third largest poultry company in the United States. The facility affected by the fire was previously a part of Wayne Farms' operations.

Prior to the merger, Wayne Farms, based in Oakwood, Georgia, produced chicken, eggs and feed. According to WATTPoultry.com’s Top Poultry Companies database, it slaughtered 395 million birds in 2021 and has eight slaughter plants, nine hatcheries and six feed mills. According to Feed Strategy’s Top Feed Companies database, it produced 2.4 million metric tons of feed in 2021.
