New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were confirmed in the states of Virginia and Iowa.

Avian influenza in Virginia

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that HPAI was confirmed in a commercial flock of 11,000 turkeys in Rockingham County on January 25.

This is the second case of HPAI in a commercial turkey flock in Rockingham County, and the second case for Virginia as a whole. The earlier case was confirmed on January 19, and it involved 25,300 birds.

Also on January 25, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) reported that APHIS officials had confirmed a new case of HPAI in a commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista County.

IDALS did not disclose the size of the affected flock, and APHIS had not yet published information concerning the case on its website at the time. However, APHIS has since revealed that the flock involved 27,700 birds.

This is the county’s seventh case of HPAI during the 2022-23 outbreak, and the sixth case in a commercial turkey operation. The other case involved a flock of 5,347,500 commercial egg laying hens.

The six previous cases in Buena Vista County all occurred in 2022, with the first one confirmed on March 6.

Iowa has lost more birds in the HPAI outbreak of 2022-23 than any other state. Approximately 16 million Iowa birds have died during this outbreak.
