2 Sisters Food Group says its aging poultry plant in Llangefni, Wales, is no longer sustainable, and announced to employees that it is proposing to close the facility.

In an announcement on its website, the U.K.-based poultry company said a review of the Llangefni plant showed that because it is old, one of its smallest sites and lacking the space needed to be efficiently run, it is no longer sustainable for the company.

“The cost to produce here is higher, and it would require significant investment to bring it up to the standards of our other factories,” the company stated. “Our products can be made more efficiently elsewhere across our estate.”

2 Sisters Food Group said it is proposing to cease operations at the plant. While the company acknowledged that the announcement is disappointing to workers at the facility, it added the decision is not a reflection of the work and commitment of the people who work there.

“However, we have a duty to remain competitive and protect our wider business on which many thousands of people depend,” the company stated.

2 Sisters Food Group’s priority now is to hold consultations with all affected employees and their representatives, to “explore the full range of options” before making any final decisions about the plant’s fate. Those options include redeployment opportunities in the region with the help of all relevant support agencies, both inside and outside of the business.

The company announced in 2018 it was adding jobs to the Llangefni plant, as well as at four others, while it closed production at its facilities in Cambuslang, Scotland; Smethwick, England; and Wolverhampton, England.

In 2020, the Llangefni plant was idled from June 18 to July 3 because of concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2 Sisters Food Group is the largest poultry producer in the U.K.
