Grocery store chain Super Indo has established a timeline to offer only cage-free eggs in its stores under its 365 brand.

According to its updated cage-free policy, Super Indo is working towards offering only 100% cage-free eggs by 2035, provided there are no limitations in terms of availability, affordability and customer acceptance.

We need more egg companies to start providing cage-free eggs, and we will continue to encourage a larger group of companies to follow the lead of our cage-free egg suppliers, the grocer explained.

Super Indo’s updated policy involves three goals:

  1. Engaging its customers: The grocer uses several media channels to communicate the benefits of cage-free chicken eggs but is open to suggestions to make its customers more aware of its animal welfare plans.
  2. Advocation for certification with government authorities: 100% of Super Indo’s eggs certified under Indonesian Veterinary Control (NKV) standards, which involve hygiene and sanitation requirements. The grocer plans to advocate for more producers in the country to become certified under these standards.
  3. Mobilizing its suppliers and partners: Super Indo is encouraging more farms to produce cage-free eggs in the country. As of January 2023, only a few farms house layers in cage-free environments.

The grocer operates 204 supermarkets across the island of Java and the southern part of the island of Sumatra. It first started offering cage-free eggs in early 2021, and by the beginning of 2022, it sold cage-free eggs in all its locations.

Super Indo’s other ventures to support Indonesian cage-free production

In December 2022, Super Indo partnered with Indonesia’s Cage-free Innovation and Welfare Hub, research university Universitas Gadjah Mada and Singapore-based consulting firm Global Food Partners to make cage-free eggs more accessible in the country.

The collaboration involves Super Indo promoting cage-free eggs in all its grocery stores to increase the availability of cage-free eggs in the country and make them more affordable to consumers.

The partnership said its goal is to continue bringing together egg producers and other industry stakeholders to improve the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the egg industry in Indonesia.
