New partnership will support Japan’s cage-free transition

Singapore-based consulting company Global Food Partners (GFP) has launched a Japanese version of its online course "Cage-free Egg Production: the Basics,” following its recent partnership with Tokai University.

Singapore-based consulting company Global Food Partners (GFP) has launched a Japanese version of its online course "Cage-free Egg Production: the Basics,” following its recent partnership with Tokai University.

The course covers the basics of cage-free management and was developed by GFP’s Science and Extension team and Netherlands-based Aeres University of Applied Sciences (AERES).

The training material is aimed at Japan’s egg producers, veterinarians, students and other industry stakeholders, and includes a free introductory course and an advanced course.

According to the partnership’s members, the course is a valuable resource for producers who are interested in improving the welfare of their birds and want to convert to a more sustainable production system.

Dr. Kate Hartcher, GFP Animal Scientist, stated: “Recent research has shown a need for more training and technical support in cage-free production for egg producers in Japan. We’re honored to be able to work together with Tokai University to offer this course to Japan’s egg industry. Our courses have been instrumental for existing cage-free producers, those planning or beginning to transition, and other industry stakeholders like veterinarians, academics and auditors.”

Tokai University Animal Science Professor Shuichi Ito, Ph.D., commented: “The demand for cage-free eggs is growing in Japan and students and egg producers are seeking training and resources. We’re thrilled to partner with Global Food Partners - together we bring decades of global and local expertise in cage-free production to ensure a sustainable and profitable cage-free transition for egg farmers in Japan who want to make the switch.”

GFP works to expand cage-free production in other countries

In December 2022, GFP announced a similar partnership with research university Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and grocery chain Super Indo that will expand Indonesia’s Cage-free Innovation and Welfare Hub.

Super Indo committed to promoting cage-free eggs in its 204 grocery store locations across the island of Java and the southern part of the island of Sumatra as a part of the partnership.

As a part of the agreement, Super Indo is helping increase the availability of cage-free eggs in Indonesia and making them more affordable to consumers. The partnership said that its goal was to continue bringing together egg producers and other industry stakeholders to improve the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the egg industry in the country.
