2 Sisters Food Group will close its poultry plant in Llangefni, Wales, effective March 31.

Earlier this year, the company announced that it was considering ceasing operations at the facility, stating that it was unsustainable, old and lacking the space needed to be efficiently run.

At the time, 2 Sisters announced that it would hold consultations with all affected employees and their representatives, to “explore the full range of options” before making any final decisions about the plant’s fate. Those options include redeployment opportunities in the region with the help of all relevant support agencies, both inside and outside of the business.

However, 2 Sisters Food Group and the Unite union told the North Wales Pioneer that “consultation had been exhausted” and issued a joint statement on the matter.

“It’s been agreed that it is in the best interest of all colleagues for the winding down period to be as short as operationally possible, the intention is for the last date of production to be March 31,” the statement read.

"Production volumes will be significantly reduced during this time period in order to maximize the available time for colleagues to attend support events which will continue throughout. Final one-to-one consultations will be carried out in the next couple of weeks. We realize that this has been a distressing and unsettling time for all colleagues and would like to commend everyone on site for their professionalism during this difficult period."

The company announced in 2018 it was adding jobs to the Llangefni plant, as well as at four others, while it closed production at its facilities in Cambuslang, Scotland; Smethwick, England; and Wolverhampton, England.

In 2020, the Llangefni plant was idled from June 18 to July 3 because of concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2 Sisters Food Group is the largest poultry producer in the United Kingdom.
