A commercial egg laying flock in Allen, Argentina, is the country’s latest operation to be hit by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

According to a report from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the operators of the farm noticed sudden increased mortality in the hen house, and symptoms being exhibited by birds included cyanosis in combs and wattles -- symptoms consistent with HPAI.

There were two houses on the premises, and tests taken from both flocks revealed the presence of HPAI.

There were 217,000 birds on the premises.

To date, Argentina has lost 904,187 birds to HPAI. Other recent cases include a broiler farm in Mainqué, Río Negro, a commercial heavy breeder farm in Mar del Plata and a laying hen farm in Senillosa.

Backyard poultry also affected

In addition to the recent cases of HPAI in commercial poultry flocks, there are 11 new cases of HPAI in backyard flocks.

The affected flocks are in Las Lajas, Pedro Luro, General Consea, Zenon Pereira, Avia Teraie, Francisco Berra and Los Morteritos, according to another WOAH report.

Other South American countries to have confirmed HPAI cases in recent months include Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and Bolivia.
