Moy Park unveils net-zero carbon emissions poultry farm

As part of its commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Moy Park launched its state-of-the-art, net-zero facility, Beech farm – the first U.K. farm to reduce energy related GHG emissions by 100%.

As part of its commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Moy Park launched its state-of-the-art, net-zero facility, Beech farm – the first U.K. farm to reduce energy related GHG emissions by 100%.

“Everything from the design and layout of the farm building to how we capture and recycle rainwater reflects our mantra of reduce, reuse, renewable,” said Stephen Beagan, head of agri estates for Moy Park. Beech farm is a first for the poultry sector – through well thought out innovations, we have created an incredible 100% reduction in energy related GHG emissions – that represents a saving of 900 tonnes of CO2 a year.”

How does Beech farm reduce carbon emissions?

The Lincolnshire-based facility prevents energy-related GHG emissions with technology like:

  • Heat derived from ground source heat pumps,
  • Heat exchanger systems,
  • Solar technology
  • And lithium battery storage.

This technology keeps Beech farms’ Scope 1 and 2 emissions at zero.

“Like the customers we serve, our mission is to create better food for everyone sustainably from farm to fork,” explained Beagan. “As part of this commitment we continue to develop future focused strategies in the areas of energy efficiency, emissions, water use, biodiversity and waste to reduce our environmental impact.”

Moy Park is calling Beech farm a “blueprint” for the future of net-zero poultry farming.

“This is set to be a game-changer for the industry, particularly when taken in partnership with our other Scope 3 initiatives,” continued Beagan.

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?

Scope 1 GHG emissions are directly caused by a company. Scope 2 and 3 are indirectly caused by a company, but Scope 3 includes emissions caused by a company’s customers and suppliers.

Moy Park is already tackling its Scope 3 emissions using its carbon calculator to monitor how much carbon its emitting.
