The Canadian province of British Columbia has had its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) since January.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported that a new case of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock in Chilliwack was confirmed on April 29.

Specific information concerning the type of flock involved, or how many birds were affected has not been disclosed by the CFIA.

The last time HPAI was confirmed in British Columbia was January 22, with that case also being in Chilliwack. British Columbia remains the province with the most HPAI detections during the 2022-23 outbreak, with the total now at 79. Of those, 23 were in Chilliwack. Other locations in British Columbia with confirmed cases in commercial poultry include Abbotsford, Langley Township and the District of Kent.

One more HPAI case confirmed in Quebec

One day before the latest British Columbia HPAI case was confirmed, a new case was confirmed in Les Maskoutains, Quebec.

Like with the Chilliwack case, CFIA only described the affected flock as commercial poultry, and didn’t offer specifics on the type of birds involved or the size of the flock.

This case is the eighth case in Les Maskoutains, with all cases being confirmed in April. April was a rough month for Quebec poultry producers, with 13 confirmed cases. The other municipalities with affected flocks are Rouville, with three, and La Vallée-du-Richelieu, with two. The virus was also confirmed in a backyard flock in Sherbrooke.

With the newest case in Les Maskoutains, Quebec has now had 38 cases of HPAI in commercial poultry during the 2022-23 outbreak. Quebec and Alberta are tied for the province with the second most cases in HPAI during the current outbreak.
