USDA seeks comments on nutrition labeling

Regulation would affect single-ingredient poultry and meat

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is seeking additional comments by February 16, 2010, on a proposal to amend federal meat and poultry products inspection regulations to require nutrition labeling on major cuts of single-ingredient raw meat and poultry products.

The proposed rule would make mandatory the guidelines that are currently in place for voluntary nutrition labeling of these products. It would require that nutrition information be provided either on a product’s label or at its point of purchase.
