US, Russia talks continue over poultry ban

Both parties looking toward resolution

As talks continued this week with the Russian Federation about regulations effectively banning U.S. poultry imports, U.S. officials said both sides agreed discussions will continue with the goal of resolution.

At issue is the Russian ban on poultry that is, during processing, rinsed in water containing chlorine.

Representatives of the two countries began talks on Tuesday in Moscow in an attempt to resolve the dispute, though neither side seemed prepared to make concessions, according to reports.

Last week, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin was quoted as saying, “Unfortunately, among many of our partners — and above all I mean companies from the United States — we still do not see a readiness to observe our standards. If some of our foreign suppliers do not want or are not in a position to fulfill our safety requirements, then we will use other sources.”

The two sides are expected to exchange letters in the near future to try to finalize positions.
