Salmonella spreads among swine herds in Denmark

Rate more than triples in 12 years

A warning has been issued that salmonella has spread strongly among Danish pig herds in recent years. The food institute of the Technical University of Denmark has warned that monitoring found salmonella in more than 40% of herds, compared with just 11% in 1998. The European Union average is approximately 33%. The increases in Denmark appear to have occurred both in finishing units and at slaughterhouses despite countermeasures, says the food institute.
