Europe’s pig prices lower in 2009

Fall 4% to 11% in six top-producing countries

Pig prices fell in 2009 for the six European Union countries with the most pigs, according to an annual price comparison by Germany’s ISN quoted by BPEX in the United Kingdom. ISN collects price data throughout the year from 13 EU member states and converts them into prices per kilogram for a standard pig.

Compared with 2008, this survey found that the price in 2009 fell 4% to 11% for producers in Spain, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, France and Denmark–the countries holding 68% of all EU pigs. These drops were equivalent to reductions ranging from €0.06 to more than €0.16 per kilogram carcass weight.
