Russia's pork production increases 26%

More increases expected

Russian pork production increased by 26% year-on-year to 632,000 tonnes in 2009, and accounted for approximately 19% of Russian meat production during the year.

Measures implemented by the Russian government to support the meat industry resulted in the large increase in pork production last year, said Russia's Federal Statistics Service. This increase in pork production may help to explain data from Russia's Federal Customs Service showing a 4.7% year-on-year decline to US$233 million in Russian pork imports in December last year.

A further increase in pork production is expected in Russia this year.
