Oklahoma asks for moratorium on poultry litter application

Judge hears closing arguments in pollution lawsuit

Oklahoma has asked a federal court to halt the spread of poultry litter fertilizer near the Illinois River, according to Tulsa World. A lawyer for the state made the request during closing arguments in Oklahoma’s water pollution lawsuit against the poultry industry.

But lawyers for the 11 poultry companies affected by the suit argued that a moratorium would pose economic hardships and change the way that land is used in the Illinois River watershed. They also argued that poultry litter has not been conclusively shown to be a major cause of watershed degradation.

U.S. District Judge Gregory Frizzell, who heard the case, has not said when he will make a ruling.
