Philippines OKs German poultry imports

Temporary ban had been imposed over H5N1 concerns

The Philippines has ended its temporary ban on German poultry imports based on an evaluation showing the products pose a “negligible” risk of H5N1 contamination, according to Philippines Agriculture Secretary Bernie Fondevilla.

The ban went into effect in late 2009 after a case of avian influenza was identified in Germany. Reports from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Philippines Bureau of Animal Industry factored into the decision to lift the ban, the Philippine Business Mirror newspaper reported. Germany is not a major source of live or processed poultry for the Asian country.
