California-based JS West and Company now has an enriched colony housing system. These systems were recently deemed humane for layer hens by American Humane Certified, the farm animal welfare arm of the American Humane Association.
Enriched colony systems provide hens with behavioral opportunities, such as perching, nesting and dust bathing. JS West, which has 1.8 million hens, installed a system from Big Dutchman.
