The European Commission has approved six genetically engineered corn varieties for food and animal feed uses within the European Union. The six now can be used in food, feed uses, import and processing but not for cultivation within the EU, the Commission said.

The varieties were approved after having received a positive safety assessment from the European Food Safety Authority, and underwent the full authorization procedure set out in EU legislation.

The authorizations are valid for 10-years, and any products produced from the six varieties will be subject to strict labeling and traceability rules, according to the Commission.
