Markets in the news: Surge in egg exports

The combined total of American shell-egg and egg-product exports in the first half of 2010 recorded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reached the equivalent of 124 million dozen eggs, some 24% more than in the first six months of 2009. A large portion of the first-half increase involved larger exports to the Asian countries of Japan, Hong Kong, China and Korea.

The combined total of American shell-egg and egg-product exports in the first half of 2010 recorded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reached the equivalent of 124 million dozen eggs, some 24% more than in the first six months of 2009. A large portion of the first-half increase involved larger exports to the Asian countries of Japan, Hong Kong, China and Korea. Another area of export growth was the European Union, with increased shipments to EU member states such as Germany and the Netherlands.

However, the USDA said U.S. egg exports in the last six months of 2010 were not expected to match sales in the second half of 2009.
