A recent press report in the Washington Post confirms that Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, assistant commissioner of the FDA, has resigned after a tenure of less than two years. He has accepted an appointment as the Commissioner of Public Health for the state of Maryland.

In an interview on January 4, Sharfstein stated, “I was committed to the FDA, but an opportunity like this does not come along very often. It is a really great job at a really important moment in time and with terrific leadership in the state.”

Sharfstein was involved in enforcement especially with regard to over-the-counter pediatric medicines and deceptive claims by food manufacturers. He was also the FDA point man during the recent SE recall.
