Three Pilgrim's growers receive USPOULTRY Environmental Excellence Awards

Applicants rated on litter management, nutrient management, community involvement, wildlife enhancement

Three Pilgrim's Pride Corporation contract growers — Virginia-based Lucky Charm Farms LLC, North Carolina-based Huneycutt Brothers' Family Farm and West Virginia-based Shoemaker Farm — were three of six farms across the U.S. to receive the Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award during the 2011 International Poultry Expo in Atlanta.

The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association sponsors the annual awards in recognition of exemplary environmental stewardship by family farmers engaged in poultry and egg production. Applicants were rated in several categories, including dry litter or liquid manure management, nutrient management planning, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques and participation in education or outreach programs.

"We are tremendously proud of our contract growers and their focus on environmental best practices," said Walt Shafer, Pilgrim's executive vice president of operations. "These family farmers recognize the importance of being responsible stewards of the environment and promoting sustainability throughout their operations. They are an asset to both our company and our industry."
