Western European poultry hard hit by avian flu

Since the start of this month, poultry in the nations in the west of Europe appear to be bearing the brunt of the latest wave of highly pathogenic avian influenza

So far this season, a total of 190 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks have been registered in 13 European Union (EU) member states.

Calls for national authorities to increase disease controls have been heeded by the Netherlands and England in recent days as both countries experience a spike in new avian influenza outbreaks in poultry flocks.

Investigations by U.K. government body, the Environment Agency, have revealed that waste liquid from a Cranswick Country Foods pork slaughterhouse was accidentally discharged into a nearby watercourse in August of 2019.
