I was recently asked by a family member if cows threaten our planet by contributing to climate change.
When I said this is a notion promoted by politicians, scientists and even the very same animal industry, the next question was whether this was another way to increase taxes (smart lad) or a real concern. I answered, yes. And I believe that, simply because I have insufficient evidence to draw a qualified conclusion. It is not my business after all – I am just a consumer – but my livelihood depends on others using my industry as a playground for their (right or wrong) agendas.
Now, beef has been continuously victimized and there are countless efforts to reduce its production and consumption, for several reasons. That ruminants belch and produce methane that changes the climate on a global scale is a stretch for me, but if that holds true and we are in the path of curtailing beef production, may I suggest we ban tourism as well because such activity increases carbon dioxide production. And why not stop eating beans – they too cause increased gas production. Or, simply reduce human population – wait, this has already been done, so let’s not go there again.
All jokes aside, there should be at least one serious scientist who could rank sources of potential global warming. Then, we can talk about what to do. Until then, people will question the wisdom of paying attention to how much cows belch versus ignoring how much we pollute by unnecessary airplane travels. Rationalize, yes. Victimize or take advantage for political/financial reasons, no. People are not “that” stupid, and they will eventually see through such thin veils (or not).
