Brazil reported at least two new records during January. The country’s poultry meat exports notched up yet another record, this time for the highest ever exports for the month of January.

Local industry association, the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), reports that exports for the month of January stood at 420,900 metric tons (MT) more than 20% up on January 2022’s figure of 349,100 MT.

By value, the increase was even higher, rising by almost 39% to stand at US$856.6 million.

A great way to start the year as the industry breaks yet another record, adding to record breaking exports last year, the year before, and probably in a lot of other months, quarters, and years too.

Not that the last decade has always been plain sailing for Brazil in export markets. During at least three of the last 10 years, volumes contracted but, taking the period as a whole, shipments have gone up and up.

Prior to 1975, Brazil, now the world’s largest exporter of chicken meat, sold no chicken overseas. Yet, each year, is position as the chicken house of the world has become more and more secure.

Various factors have favored this position, and I won’t detail them here, but to quote the Guinness Book of Records, to become a record-holder requires “determination, extraordinary skills, and commitment,” and his would certainly appear to be the case where the Brazilian sector is concerned.

Another record but ...

And talking of breaking records, another record came out of Brazil in January. Perdigão, part of the world’s third largest poultry producer BRF, broke the Guinness World Record for the longest line of torpedo (submarine) sandwiches to celebrate the city of São Paulo’s 469th anniversary. 1,180 were lined up

Marcel Sacco, Global Vice President of Marketing and New Business with Perdigão commented that the company wanted to offer São Paulo a gift that reflected the grandeur and history, of one the largest metropolises in the world, and that the record breaking event celebrated São Paulo with style and history-making by using Mortadela Ouro Perdigao.

Lots of fun I’m sure, but why mortadela, also known in the English-speaking world as luncheon meat, and not chicken? BRF surely has plenty to offer and, where record breaking is concerned, the ABPA has more than enough experience.

But luncheon meat it was, and the other bit of good news is that 20% of the torpedoes went to food charities. I think we can forgive the use of pork rather than chicken in this case, as the chicken industry has more than enough records of its own!
