Will teen on Twitter get year of free chicken nuggets?

The chicken industry could use a few fans like Carter Wilkerson.

The Nevada teenager has taken his fandom of chicken nuggets and has turned himself into a social media celebrity.

On April 5, Wilkerson, on Twitter asked the quick service restaurant chain “Yo @Wendys how many retweets for a year of chicken nuggets?”

And while Wilkerson told USA Today he didn’t really expect a reply, he got one. Wendy’s answered his question, saying he would get his wish if he got 18 million.

Now, it’s game on. Wilkerson pleaded with his followers on Twitter for a retweet, typing “A man needs his nuggs.”

Retweet away!

While 18 million may seem like an unrealistic figure to attain, it appears like he is already pretty well on his way. At the time I sat down to write this blog on April 10, he had already been retweeted more than 2.3 million times.

I know journalists should just report the news and not get involved, but when it is something as fun and whimsical as this how couldn’t one get involved? I felt the need to retweet him, and hope that others will do the same.

In a world where nasty political debate takes up too much cyberspace on social media, it is a nice change of pace to see Twitter users going crazy to help a kid on his quest to getting a year’s worth of free chicken.

At this point, it seems like it will be a matter of when and not if he will get those retweets.

Wendy’s found itself in the middle of a great public relations opportunity and if handled well, could really boost the chain’s chicken sales.

I wish both Wendy’s and Wilkerson well.
