It’s been tough to see the news coverage of the devastation brought on by Hurricane Harvey, but the bright spot is getting to see how people are opening their hearts and helping those people so desperately in need.
Not surprisingly, the poultry industry and other agriculture-related businesses have been among those who have offered assistance. Off the top of my head, I can think of three companies that are making a difference.
Tyson Foods
One example is Tyson Foods, the largest broiler company in the United States. The company has sent teams to prepare meals for those affected by, and responding to, the hurricane and its subsequent flooding. A cook site is being set up at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Conroe, Texas, where hot meals will be served, starting at 11 a.m. Friday.
In the effort, Tyson will be partnering with Bimbo Bakeries, Harris Baking, Hugg & Hall Equipment and Peppersource to maximize the efforts, the company stated in a press release.
In addition, Tyson Foods has contributed to both the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army to assist with those efforts.
Allen Harim
Another top poultry company, Allen Harim, has loaded a truck with 40,000 pounds of chicken from its plant in Harbeson, Delaware, to be shipped to the Houston area. That chicken will be donated to Operation BBQ Relief, an organization that has mobilized and is on the ground feeding Harvey victims as well.
Perdue
Perdue has also shown its charitable side, committing one million pounds of protein to support the relief efforts. The donated food will be directed to local food banks affiliated with Feeding America, as well as the Houston Independent School District.
Rescue efforts are also underway for pets and animals, and Perdue has donated nearly 68,000 pounds of its Spot Farms brand dehydrated dog food to Feeding America.
I know there have been others in the industry who have helped those affected by this horrible disaster, and I apologize for overlooking you, because all who have pitched in deserve applause.
