The topic of the chicken sandwich wars is pretty much a daily conversation piece for those of us who produce content for the WATTPoultry.com website.

Normally, the names thrown out are Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Zaxby’s, KFC – you know, the names you would expect.

But how about Britney Spears?

Yes, the pop star who emerged in the 1990s is sharing her expertise in crafting a chicken sandwich. She recently did so via her Instagram channel with a video.

Spears tells her viewers she is making her “first delicacy sandwich.” She tells a story of how 15 years ago she used to eat at a place called “Schlotzky’s Deli Sandwiches” in New York City. She said, “It was literally God to me, and 15 years later, I’m still in search of a sandwich that tastes just like that.”

O.K. I’ve got to pause here a minute. She speaks of Schlotzky’s as if it was some exotic, hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind eatery. I have nothing against Schlotzky’s. I love Schlotzky’s sandwiches, too, but the last time I ate at one I was in Ponca City, Oklahoma. They aren’t all that hard to find.

But I digress. Back to Britney.

She said she would try to recreate the sandwich to the best of her ability. She starts with artisan cibatta bread. Then she adds goat cheese and chopped pecans. Then she adds shredded chicken and turkey. (Yes, turkey industry friends, you can join in on these sandwich wars, too.) Finally, she adds chopped pears, sliced avocado and lettuce.

An opportunity for Schlotzky’s?

If truth be told, I’d try this sandwich, but I’d say hold the avocado.

And maybe the folks at Schlotzky’s ought to take this video and run with it. I mean, they’ve got a celebrity pitch person already lined up, now they just need to allocate a little (or a lot) to their marketing budget.

It may not be the same type of chicken sandwich that other quick service restaurants are promoting, but if someone waited 15 years for this type of sandwich, it must be good. And creating a bigger demand for such a sandwich will certainly be good for the broiler and turkey industries.
