VIDEO: PSA asks me about sensors to enhance poultry welfare

I’m used to asking the questions, but a recent interview with the Poultry Science Association (PSA) about new sensor technology that could enhance poultry welfare during the transportation process put me in the hot seat.

I’m used to asking the questions, but a recent interview with the Poultry Science Association (PSA) about new sensor technology that could enhance poultry welfare during the transportation process put me in the hot seat.

The technology records the micro-climate conditions experienced by live birds as they travel between the farm and the processing plant.

If a threshold is exceeded, an alert is sent automatically to the driver and other key stakeholders. Because the data is stored in the cloud with blockchain, it can be accessed anywhere in the world and can be used to increase transparency and traceability in the poultry supply chain.

Fluctuations in temperature, humidity, vibration, ammonia, carbon dioxide and other environmental conditions can be stressful to poultry, which can result in lower quality products, lower revenues and higher mortality.

The technology discussed on Let’s Squawk About It was originally presented as an innovation at the Poultry Tech Summit by Joel Sotomayor, president and CEO, Transport Genie Ltd.

If you are a researcher or an entrepreneur that has developed an innovation or technology that could help solve a current poultry industry problem and you want to connect with poultry sector technology experts, financiers, bankers and venture capitalists looking for new projects to fund, keep an eye out for the Poultry Tech Summit Call for Innovations next month.

Partnerships are critical to learning more about the challenges and opportunities for future innovation within the poultry industry. I look forward to working with PSA again in the future.
