DiGiorno Thanksgiving Pizza or Lawrence Welk? Tough call

Turkey pizza offering from DiGiorno, for better or worse, comes back for its second Thanksgiving season.

When it comes to meats, it seems like just about everything goes as a pizza topping.

However, you seldom, if ever, hear of turkey pizza. Some of you may not even know that turkey pizza even exists.

I have eaten turkey pizza, and have fond memories of it. It was almost a post-Thanksgiving Saturday night tradition.

Growing up, Saturday nights were pizza nights. Mom would be in the kitchen preparing a pizza from a Chef Boyardee pizza kit, while Dad would be in the living room watching The Lawrence Welk Show in hopes that my sister and I would also become fans. I remember when Bob Havens, the lead trombone player in the orchestra, would do a solo, Dad would get excited thinking that someday I could play like that and perform on such a great stage.

If you know about Lawrence Welk, you know about the cheesy songs performed by cheesy singers and cheesy orchestra members. And of course they were wearing cheesy outfits.

But the only thing cheesy I was interested in was the pizza Mom was fixing, so we could wolf it down and then go to the skating rink.

Usually Mom’s pizzas had hamburger topping, but occasionally she would get creative, like after Thanksgiving when she would put Thanksgiving turkey leftovers on it. And I really liked it.

As an adult, I shared that tradition with my family a few times after Thanksgiving. It always got eaten, and I like to think it was eaten because it was liked, and not out of politeness, like the reason my sister and I watched Lawrence Welk.

DiGiorno’s take on turkey pizza

What you might not know is that you won’t necessarily have to make your own turkey pizza.

I have read that DiGiorno’s, the popular maker of frozen pizza, has that covered. Last year, they introduced its Thanksgiving Pizza. For better or worse, it is back this year at Kroger-affiliated stores.

But I know this isn’t my mother’s turkey pizza.

According to a press release, DiGiorno’s creation features classic turkey, creamy gravy sauce, diced sweet potatoes, colorful green beans and cranberries, rich mozzarella and cheddar cheeses plus a crispy onion topping – all loaded on top of a Detroit Style crust.

Normally, unless it is raw, you will not have any trouble getting me to eat turkey on anything. But I’m inclined to say I would probably not enjoy this.

Which would you choose?

Now I realize there are people out there who may not share my tastes in food, just as there are those who don’t share my tastes in music.

With that in mind, I’m going to channel a game my family likes to play: Would you rather? In this game, you take two unpleasant scenarios and try to decide which is the least unpleasant.

So, would you rather eat a DiGiorno Thanksgiving Pizza or watch Lawrence Welk?

I’m going to have to give Mr. Welk the nod on this one. At least it is unintentionally humorous, and that humor is increased exponentially if you have teenagers in the house who think the show is even more preposterous than the young version of me did. (Yes, I subjected my poor kids to reruns of the show on PBS.)

Plus, I can now look back on watching it as a youth and Dad’s fascination with the show as fun, endearing memories.

And creating new memories with a DiGiorno Thanksgiving Pizza is something I simply don’t desire to do.

But I may be wrong. You might think this pizza is “Wonderful, Wonderful.”

Adios, au revoir, auf wiedersehen.
