Mexico is well known within the global poultry industry as the country with the highest per capita egg consumption in the world. According to the latest numbers provided by the Mexican Poultry Producers Association, the average Mexican eats 392 eggs per year. With a layer population of 173 million layers, it is the country with the most laying hens in Latin America.
Now, I'm going to touch on a topic that I don't like to in my blogs: politics. However, I will do it to give the reader context.
The current administration in Mexico has been, to say the least, quite different, disrupting and contradictory. Many different actions have been taken (I don’t agree with many of them), but to top it off, last week, the administration sparked yet another debate – a rather silly one, by the way. Just when the administration’s term is set to conclude at the end of the month.
President López Obrador does not like traditional media or journalists because he says they attack him, so he called a press conference with “independent” journalists. The call was early in the morning, and, at the end, they were offered eggs and bread – just what any Mexican would have for breakfast: eggs, period.
Well, the issue arose when all of the traditional media and journalists – those that were not invited – overwhelmingly criticized the breakfast offered, as if it had been an offensive gesture. They even used the derogatory or childish term of “eggies” (huevitos in Spanish), as if it were something insignificant, not worthy. Were they expecting salmon, caviar or something even more fancy?
Actually, what they showed was their anger because they were not invited, and they diverted their criticism to this administration over eggs.
Is this really something to criticize – having eggs for breakfast? Or is it something else? I am sure they would have also been critical if caviar was offered.
All social media channels were overloaded with this topic. Some were really funny, some very critical.
But now, I am going to turn this issue around. I think it was great for the poultry industry!
Eggs continue to be our breakfast – the best and the cheapest animal protein anyone can get, regardless of what segment of the population you belong.
Quite democratic, I would say, and a tremendous national industry.
What do you think?
