Mexico has the highest per capita egg consumption in the world with 392 eggs in 2023. We will see what this year’s consumption will be as 2024 comes to a close.

During the World Egg Day celebration on October 11, alongside the several activities carried out, the 2024 Egg Fair (Feria del Huevo 2024) was held in Tepatitlán, Jalisco (amicably known as “Tepa”), the cradle of egg production in Mexico. The state of Jalisco produces 50.4% of all the eggs in the country. It is also said that the area of Los Altos, where Tepa is located, is the most densely populated area of laying hens in the world.

During the Egg Fair, one of the fun activities was a race of young people carrying an egg on a spoon for 100 meters in 10 minutes. Close to 2,700 youngsters from a local high school beat the Guinness world record, previously held by London with 1,400 people.

In addition to the Guinness record race, they had other fun activities such as a bike competition, find-an-egg rally, decorated cart race, as well as conferences and an exhibition of 100 dishes prepared with eggs coming from Los Altos. They also served a free breakfast with eggs to 1,500 people.

I personally think that the industry is performing really well in promoting eggs, a tough matter when you have such a high consumption rate. And at the same time, the National Poultry Producers Association (Unión Nacional de Avicultores, UNA) just announced that egg production is reaching 140 million eggs per day, 1.8% higher than the 137 million eggs per day produced in 2023. As they point out, this is evidence of higher local demand and population growth, but perhaps it will be proof of higher per capita consumption.

Mexico is the fourth largest egg producer in the world, after China, India and the U.S. This year, a 2.3% increase in production is expected. Good signs of a thriving industry, despite all of the mishaps suffered in the past few years.

What do you think?
