A poultry transportation worker died on September 23 in Smarr, Georgia, after apparently being hit by a forklift.

Officials with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office told WMAZ that the victim had been identified as Gary Patterson, Fairmount, Georgia.

The incident occurred at Vanhuss Poultry, in Smarr, sometime between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Patterson was at the farm while a crew of seven people was apparently there to catch chickens for him to haul to Perdue Farms facility.

An investigation is being conducted, and so far, authorities have limited information. Nobody present admitted to driving the forklift, Monroe County Coroner Joey Proctor told the news outlet. Proctor examined the body, and said the injuries were to the pelvis, hips, legs and abdomen.

When contacted by WATT Global Media, a spokesperson for Perdue Farms issued the following statement: "We can confirm this unfortunate incident occurred while this individual was working for an outside contractor. We express our condolences to his family."

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at +1.478.994.7010.
