Topigs includes in its breeding programme a method that allows selection to take account of the social behaviour between pigs in a pen. This involves a mathematical model developed jointly in the Netherlands by the Institute for Pig Genetics and the animal breeding/genomics centre of Wageningen University, after research showed social interactions between pigs are inherited and can make a significant contribution to animal performance.
