Claxton Poultry Farms, based in Claxton, Georgia, is a family-owned poultry company founded in 1949 by Norman Fries. It is currently in its third generation of family ownership and employs 2,000 people.
Claxton Poultry produced 9.059 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2023, an increase from 9 million pounds produced in 2022. Its 2023 sales were $550 million, an increase from $535 million in 2022. Claxton Poultry's sales break out is 10% institutional, 40% foodservice, 10% industrial, 25% retail and 15% export. Its product forms are 80% fresh and 20% frozen; and 75% cut-up. and 25% further processed. Claxton Poultry has 350 products, and its brand is Claxton Select. According to its 2023 survey response, Claxton’s flock is 100% raised either no antibiotics ever or antibiotic-free.
In 2020, Claxton Poultry President Mikell Fries and other Claxton leaders were indicted on federal antitrust charges along with other poultry industry executives. The Claxton executives pled not guilty. In July 2022, after a series of federal trials and re-trials in 2021 and 2022, Fries and another Claxton executive were found not guilty. In July 2023, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois cleared Claxton Poultry of any allegations of collusion.
