Lai Sun Dining, a Hong Kong-headquartered restaurant group, has announced that it is now sourcing 90% of its eggs and egg products from cage-free suppliers, and has failed to meet its 2023 deadline for phasing out the purchase of eggs from caged hens.

Thought to serve 2 million eggs annually, the company operates 19 restaurant brands across 20 venues worldwide and counts seven Michelin Stars in its portfolio. Additionally, it operates three exclusive private members clubs.

In 2022, Lai Sun Dining made a commitment to source all its eggs from cage-free suppliers by the end of 2023. As the end of 2024 approaches, and 10% of the company’s eggs still come from caged birds, a new deadline of 2026 has been set.

Progress recognized

Open Wing Alliance, a grouping of organizations dedicated to ending the production of eggs from caged birds, notes that that Lai Sung Dining was subject to consumer pressure for corporate transparency and responsible sourcing. This revealed that the company had failed to meet its original target, but the group recognizes that the company has, nevertheless, made impressive progress in altering how it sources eggs.
