Countries around the world are growing and changing their diets with the recognition that eggs are a good source of protein, leading to increasing egg consumption. As populations are expected to grow globally, so is egg consumption.

US egg consumption data

U.S. egg consumption is forecast by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to be nearly 280 eggs per person in 2019, making it the highest egg consumption level over the past decade. In the short term, the USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report estimates the total number of eggs consumed in the U.S. in 2019 at 7,951.8 million dozen and reaching over 8,000 million dozen in 2020, with per capita consumption in 2019 at 289.7 eggs. In terms of number of eggs, USDA projects consumption rising from 7,507 million dozen in 2017 to 8,719 million dozen by 2028.

In 2018, the retail price for a dozen eggs in the United States was $1.60; egg prices in the United States peaked in 2015, when a dozen eggs cost an average of $2.75. However, with lower egg prices now, consumers are largely eating eggs “a couple times a week but not every day,” leaving some room for industry education about their benefits with more protein in the diet.

Egg consumption around the world

As the nutritional benefits of eggs are realized, egg consumption around the world is projected to grow. The European Commission, for example, is projecting a positive growth in per capita egg consumption over the next decade from 2018-30 compared to negative consumption in the past decade of 2006-18. In Spain, for example, egg consumption has increased from nearly 56 million kilograms (kg) in 2013 to about 5 billion kg in 2018 for non-organic eggs, outweighing that of organic eggs sold. Likewise, in Germany, egg consumption is slowly growing. The country’s per capita egg consumption of 12.7 kg in 2018 was estimated to have grown to 14.5 kg in 2018.
