Quick service restaurant (QSR) Carl’s Jr. announced that it met its 100% cage-free egg sourcing goal in its U.S. locations.

I followed the link to the announcement below and could not find a date with it. Is this really new? I don’t know, and you don’t need to come back to me on it, but use your judgement, if you are sure that it is, then go ahead with the article, but I could not tell.

In the announcement, the chain stated: “We have committed to transitioning our egg supply to 100% cage-free eggs in our restaurants globally in 2025. We are pleased to report that in all domestic Carl’s Jr. restaurants we have met our commitment and are 100% cage-free. Our commitment continues to stay firm, and we are resolute to a cage-free egg supply in 2025 in all of our domestic and international restaurants.”

Carl’s Jr. originally made its cage-free pledge alongside nine other QSRs in 2016. Carl’s Jr. is owned by parent company CKE Restaurants.

Cage-free commitments are progressing globally

In January 2024, animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming published its 2023 EggTrack Report, which stated that approximately 75% of companies with cage-free commitments have reported progress on their cage-free transition.

The report tracks cage-free deadlines, progress made against pledges and key findings concerning the egg industry’s transition. Of the companies included in the report, 79 operate internationally, 274 operate in Europe and the U.K., 134 operate in the U.S. and 23 operate in the Asia-Pacific region.

Regionally, the largest amount of cage-free transition progress announced in the report was in Europe.

There are 274 companies listed in the report with 440 European commitments. Approximately 75% are reporting on progress towards their pledge. The majority of the 274 companies are from the retailers and meal kit sector, followed by restaurants and food service and hospitality companies.
