Due to the provisions of their contracts and other market forces, chicken and turkey growers are relatively unaffected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

In a WATT Poultry Chat interview, Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon LLC, spoke about the structure of contracts the farmers who grow the birds for an integrated poultry company use. These contracts allow them to receive payments even if a processing plant is shut down and the birds cannot be processed.

Due to this provision, poultry growers are currently faring better than their counterparts raising hogs and cattle.
