Italy, the EU's largest net importer of pig meat, increased its pork imports by 3 percent during the first nine months of 2013 when compared to the same nine-month period in 2012. The Italian pork imports totaled 697,200 metric tons.
Italian pork import growth was driven by an 11 percent increase in pork from Germany, which increased pig production, according to BPEX.
In spite of the increase, Italian purchases of pork during the first nine months of 2013 declined from the same nine-month period in 2011.
Traditionally, Italy exports only a small amount of the pork it produces. In 2013 shipments were down by 7 percent when compared with 2012.
