This year’s global outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has added a new country to the list: Paraguay.
The country’s first outbreak was reported on May 15 at a backyard flock in Colonia Neuland, according to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). Health officials have culled 11 out of the 60 birds as of now.
The second outbreak was reported two days later on May 17 at another backyard flock in Mariscal Estigarribia of which 19 of the 44 birds were culled.
The two locations are over 100 kilometers apart, and the origin of the outbreaks is unknown.
