Electrical contractor fined in death at Butterball facility

The company was cited with a serious violation and ordered to pay a $6,452 fine.

North Carolina-based R.H. McRae’s Electrical Contractors has been fined $6,452.40 in a fatal incident at the Butterball plant in Mount Olive, North Carolina. The fatal accident occurred on February 22.

According to a report from WCTI, the contractor was cited by the North Carolina Department of Labor with an alleged serious violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolia, following an agency inspection that began the day after the incident.

R.H. McRae’s Electrical Contractors has 15 working days to request an informal conference, file a notice to contest the fine, or pay the fine.

Butterball was never cited in the incident.

Following the death of the worker, the turkey company issued the following statement: “On Thursday, February 22, 2024, an external contractor’s employee working on a project at Butterball’s Mount Olive, NC, facility passed away from injuries sustained during a tragic incident. We are deeply saddened, and we extend our sincere condolences to their family and friends. We will continue to coordinate closely with the relevant authorities as the investigation remains ongoing.”
