North Carolina State University prof announces retirement

Frank Edens spent 50 years at the school.

Renowned poultry expert, Professor Frank Edens, marks 50 years at North Carolina State University. Edens' pioneering contributions to poultry physiology and immunology have significantly advanced industry knowledge, aiding in the protection of flocks from health stressors.

Despite an early aversion to chickens, Edens' career took a turn during a visit to Virginia Tech's poultry science department. Hired as a student worker, Edens delved into extensive research, resulting in over 180 publications and numerous books.

Over five decades at NC State, Edens' research covered diverse areas such as endocrinology, immunology, pathology, nutrition and molecular biology, all centered around stress physiology. Notable achievements include uncovering bacteria's role in poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS) and enhancing understanding of stress reactions in chickens.

Recognized as an expert in his field, Edens prioritizes supporting staff and students. He has transformed spaces within the department and initiated an annual faculty-funded award for technicians. Colleagues commend his dedication to teaching and mentorship.

As Edens plans for phased retirement in July 2024, he emphasizes the importance of a balanced life, placing family first. Future endeavors include contributing to his church, resuming his hobby of acrylic painting and collaborating on avian physiology projects.

Edens' lasting impact on the poultry science community reflects a career marked by continuous learning and positive contributions.
