DAERA announces new vet officer

Brian Dooher has been with DAERA since 2005.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is pleased to announce the successful appointment of Brian Dooher (MRCVS) as the new chief veterinary officer (CVO) for Northern Ireland.

As head of veterinary service & animal health group (VSAHG), Dooher will lead a dedicated team of over 650 staff across various functions, providing evidence-based advice to DAERA, executive ministers and other governmental bodies.

In his statement, Dooher expressed his honor at being selected for the role and his commitment to supporting the farming and food industry. He emphasized collaboration with stakeholders, delivery partners and colleagues across administrations to address challenges in animal health, welfare and public health.

Dooher, a University College Dublin graduate, brings extensive experience, having served in private practice before joining DAERA in 2005. He has held the position of deputy chief veterinary officer (DCVO) since 2018.

The open recruitment process for this senior civil service post began in January 2023, with Dooher assuming his role at the end of March 2024.
