The Department of Poultry Science recently recognized three outstanding students for their academic achievements. The honorees include Jossie Santamaria, James Higuita and Taylor Schubauer, who were each selected as the top students in their respective degree programs.
Outstanding Ph.D. Student
Jossie Santamaria, from Los Anastacios, Dolega, Panama, was named the 2024 Outstanding Ph.D. Student. Santamaria chose to pursue a graduate degree in poultry science with the goal of making a significant impact on food security and sustainability. He values the relationships he built within the department and appreciates the supportive academic environment. Santamaria plans to continue his career in academia, focusing on research, teaching and advancing the understanding of poultry immunology and infectious diseases. His long-term goal is to secure a faculty position and mentor future students.
Outstanding M.S. Student
James Higuita, from Medellin, Colombia, was recognized as the 2024 Outstanding M.S. Student. Higuita's passion for poultry farming and interest in applied research drove him to pursue a master's degree in poultry science. He is committed to addressing global challenges such as food security and sustainability through the poultry industry. Higuita plans to continue his education by pursuing a Ph.D. in poultry science at the University of Arkansas, with the goal of working in the U.S. poultry industry.
Outstanding Senior
Taylor Schubauer, from Gibbon, Nebraska, was named the 2024 Outstanding Senior. Schubauer's love for poultry has been a lifelong passion, and she chose to major in poultry science to drive change within the industry. She enjoyed the positive environment fostered by the faculty and learned to embrace change during her studies. Schubauer aims to work full-time in live production as a hatchery assistant or service technician, where she hopes to introduce innovative ideas and improve sustainability in the industry.
These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication and excellence in their academic pursuits, reflecting the high standards of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.
