National Turkey Federation offering 'Thanksgiving 101' tips and recipes

Goal is to help consumers have a stress-free holiday.

With Thanksgiving approaching, the National Turkey Federation (NTF) has shared a comprehensive guide to help Americans choose, prepare and serve turkey stress-free. NTF President and CEO Leslee Oden emphasized the range of turkey options available this year, from whole birds to specialized cuts, encouraging everyone to find their perfect match and access NTF’s “Thanksgiving 101” for tips and recipes.

Essential Turkey Tips and Food Safety

NTF offers four key food safety practices to ensure a safe and delicious Thanksgiving:

  1. Clean: Wash hands and surfaces thoroughly before and after handling raw turkey
  2. Separate: Use different cutting boards for raw turkey and other ingredients to avoid cross-contamination
  3. Cook: Ensure the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F to kill any bacteria
  4. Chill: Store leftovers within two hours and consume or freeze them within three to four days

Tip: Don’t rinse your turkey—this can spread bacteria around the kitchen.

Preparing the Perfect Turkey

NTF’s Thanksgiving 101 covers all you need, from thawing and carving to roasting and grilling. Smoking is also a flavorful option to consider for a unique twist.

Making the Most of Leftovers

Transform leftover turkey into new meals or freeze it for up to six months for future dishes. For optimal results, freeze the turkey within a day of cooking.
