Governor Tim Walz hosted event and was joined by agricultural leaders and advocates.

Governor Tim Walz celebrated Minnesota's status as the top turkey-producing state during the annual Thanksgiving turkey presentation at the Capitol. Joined by agricultural leaders and advocates, the governor recognized the contributions of Minnesota’s turkey farmers and announced new funding to combat food insecurity ahead of the holidays.

"Minnesota is proud to lead the nation in turkey production, thanks to our hardworking, dedicated turkey growers," said Governor Walz. "Our farmers feed the world while driving Minnesota’s agricultural economy. Their efforts ensure families can enjoy their favorite holiday meals, and for that, we are deeply grateful."

Minnesota boasts over 600 turkey farms and 450 growers who raise 40 million birds annually, contributing 18% of the nation’s turkey production. The industry generates $12 billion in economic impact and supports more than 46,000 jobs statewide.

Governor Walz also announced $5 million in new funding to combat food insecurity, underscoring the state’s commitment to ensuring all Minnesotans have access to nutritious meals during the holiday season.

Allison O'Toole, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland, commended the funding initiative:"This investment will go a long way in helping Minnesotans facing food insecurity. We are thankful for the state’s leadership in addressing hunger, especially during a time of increased need."

The event was attended by Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen, Minnesota Turkey Growers Association President Jake Vlaminck, and Minnesota Turkey Research and Promotion Council President Loren Brey.

Jake Vlaminck emphasized the pride of Minnesota’s turkey farmers:"Minnesota’s turkey growers work tirelessly to provide high-quality products. It’s rewarding to see their dedication celebrated on a national level."
