When it comes to Super Bowl feasts, no food is more beloved than chicken wings. The National Chicken Council (NCC) has released its annual Chicken Wing Report, predicting that Americans will consume a staggering 1.47 billion chicken wings during Super Bowl LIX, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles battle for the Lombardi Trophy. This marks a 1.5% increase from last year, adding 20 million more wings to the tally.
"Matthew McConaughey was right: Football is for food," said NCC spokesperson Tom Super. "Pizza, guacamole, and chips are great, but when it comes to the Super Bowl, chicken wings rule the roost. And with Philadelphia in the game, we might see an uptick in chicken cheesesteaks, too."
How Big is 1.47 Billion Wings?
- If every NFL player ate 50 wings a day, it would take them 720 years to finish them all
- Laid end-to-end, these wings would stretch from Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City) to Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia) 63 times
- Enough to give every American more than four wings each
- Wrapped around the Earth, the wings would circle the planet more than three times
Super Bowl Wing Sales Surge
Retail wing sales in Kansas City and Philadelphia saw a major boost during the NFL playoffs:
- Chiefs fans drove a +21.9% increase in wing sales
- Eagles fans followed closely, with a +19% spike in sales
- Nationally, U.S. wing sales rose +12%, with playoff cities averaging a +15.5% increase
